Quick Answer

If you're weighing custom against the boxed product at the home center for a Meridian-Kessler house, the answers below explain the actual difference. It isn't brand names, it's that one is cut to your opening and the other isn't.

  • Services: faux wood blinds, wood blinds, vertical blinds, aluminum mini blinds
  • Service area: Meridian-Kessler, Marion County, IN and surrounding areas
  • Two different timelines apply. New custom product takes weeks because it has to be made. Repairs to what's already hanging, a cord lock, a ladder string, a chain that jumped the clutch, are usually far quicker.
  • Insured and bonded
  • Serving Meridian-Kessler, IN since 2008

Schedule Your Free In-Home Measure

Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover. Houses in Meridian-Kessler carry a mix of window types: leaded glass, sunrooms, French doors, kitchen and dining room bays, and basement lookout or egress windows all turn up across the neighborhood. Many of the older houses have replacement windows in some rooms and original wood sash in others, so frame depth and squareness change from room to room. The crew measures each opening separately and notes where a mount has to clear a crank, a hinge or a door handle, and in the Tudor cottages the casements set the plan.

I agree to be contacted by Meridian-Kessler Window Treatments regarding my inquiry.

Meridian-Kessler runs from 38th Street north to Kessler Boulevard and from Meridian Street east to the Monon Trail, about four miles north of downtown. Country estates went up along Meridian Street in the late 1890s, and George Kessler redesigned 38th Street, then called Maple Road, as a parkway in 1905. The fastest building came in the 1920s and 1930s, and by the end of World War II the neighborhood was full. Landowners subdivided it piece by piece, so the streets form an irregular grid, with American Foursquare houses dominating south of 44th Street and bungalows concentrated east of College Avenue. Large period revival houses stand west of College Avenue, and by 2006 more than 250 homes in the neighborhood were listed on the National Register.

Top treatments, cornices, valances and fascia all do the same basic job of hiding hardware, but they hide different amounts. A fascia on a roller conceals the tube and gives a clean line. A fabric valance softens it. A cornice adds architecture. In Meridian-Kessler rooms with tall openings a top treatment is often what makes the window look finished rather than merely covered.

When the product arrives we inspect it before it ever comes to your house. A dented hembar or a fabric flaw found in the shop is a phone call. Found in your Meridian-Kessler living room with the ladder up, it's a wasted morning. If one piece is wrong we start the remake immediately and install everything else, so you're not waiting on the whole order because of one window.

Built in the Last Few Years?

Many of our Meridian-Kessler customers moved into a house built by one of these companies. Builder blinds are usually stock sizes trimmed to fit, so if yours came with the house and never ran right, that is why. We measure the openings as built rather than off the plan.

What We Are Running in Meridian-Kessler Right Now

Both offers apply to work quoted and ordered while they are posted here. Ask about them at the in-home measure and we will put the discount on the written quote before you decide anything.

Offer 1

$500 Off Your First Exterior Screen, Plus a Free Motorization Upgrade

Take $500 off your first exterior screen and we will add the motorization upgrade at no charge. Exterior screens stop solar heat outside the glass, which is the only place you can stop it before it is already in the room, and a motor is the difference between using one and forgetting it.

Applies to a first exterior screen. Ask at the measure so the discount is on the written quote before you order. Motorized product runs on batteries that need replacing, about a year on Hunter Douglas PowerView.

Offer 2

Free Motorization Upgrade on Select Interior Shades

Pick from the qualifying interior shade lines and the motorization upgrade is free. It is worth most on the openings you would otherwise leave alone: tall great room glass, anything above a stair, and the west windows nobody remembers to close by four.

Select interior shade lines only. We will tell you at the measure which of your openings qualify. Batteries are a real running cost and are not included.

Window Treatment Services for Meridian-Kessler Homes

From one room to a whole house, Meridian-Kessler Window Treatments measures every opening, orders it custom, and installs it with the same crew that took the measurements.

Faux Wood Blinds in Meridian-Kessler

Meridian-Kessler Window Treatments measures your openings and installs its own work, and we're insured and bonded. Indiana's Home Improvement Contract Act at IC 24-5-11 requires a written contract with scope and price on residential work over $150, so your Meridian-Kessler order arrives on paper before anything gets fabricated.

Learn more

Wood Blinds in Meridian-Kessler

Dust wood dry. A damp cloth raises grain and dulls the finish over time, so a dry microfiber or a vacuum brush is the whole routine. If a Meridian-Kessler slat picks up a mark, we'll tell you what the finish will tolerate before you try to scrub it.

Learn more

Vertical Blinds in Meridian-Kessler

A wand-operated vertical takes the loop out of the room, which matters where children play near a Meridian-Kessler patio door. Products we hang conform to ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022, and inner-cord non-compliance isn't a small thing: it's a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3.

Learn more

Aluminum Mini Blinds in Meridian-Kessler

Laundry rooms and garage windows. Anywhere in a Meridian-Kessler house where you want the light controlled and you don't want to think about the treatment again, the 1 inch aluminum slat is the cheapest honest answer we can give you.

Learn more

Roller Shades in Meridian-Kessler

Fabric openness sets how the room reads at noon. A tight weave buys privacy and a dull glow. An open weave buys the yard and some glare. There's no fabric that gives you both at once, and any Meridian-Kessler salesperson saying otherwise is selling rather than measuring.

Learn more

Solar Shades in Meridian-Kessler

Dark fabric gives a sharper view out and absorbs more heat at the glass. Light fabric reflects more heat outward and scatters more glare into the room. Most Meridian-Kessler rooms with a view end up dark, and the ones with a heat complaint don't.

Learn more

Cellular Shades in Meridian-Kessler

Meridian-Kessler Window Treatments is insured and bonded and puts every Meridian-Kessler job on paper. Indiana's Home Improvement Contract Act at IC 24-5-11 requires a written contract over $150, and yours names the cell count and the fabric beside the price. That protects you more than it protects us.

Learn more

Zebra Shades in Meridian-Kessler

With the bands closed, a zebra shade behaves roughly like a light filtering roller against a July sun in Meridian-Kessler, cutting some solar gain at the glass. Opened, it does very little. It's a light and privacy tool first, and any heat benefit is a bonus.

Learn more

Roman Shades in Meridian-Kessler

If this window gets operated ten times a day, don't buy a Roman. Folds want to be set and left, and constant cycling makes them hang unevenly. A roller shade in the same Meridian-Kessler room takes the daily abuse and looks identical every time it comes down.

Learn more

Woven Wood Shades in Meridian-Kessler

Meridian-Kessler Window Treatments is insured and bonded and puts your Meridian-Kessler order in writing, as Indiana's IC 24-5-11 requires over $150. The liner choice belongs on that paperwork, because a woven wood without a liner is a different product from one with it.

Learn more

Blackout Shades in Meridian-Kessler

Blackout fabric's heavier, so the roll at the top is thicker than a light filtering shade in the same width. On an outside mount that roll sits above the Meridian-Kessler glass, which is one more reason the outside mount wins in a bedroom.

Learn more

Plantation Shutters in Meridian-Kessler

Shutters have no cords and there's nothing hanging at all, which makes them the simplest answer to the whole child and pet question. Inner-cord non-compliance is a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3, and a shutter removes the subject from a Meridian-Kessler nursery entirely.

Learn more

Cafe Shutters in Meridian-Kessler

Where the panels stop is the single decision making these look right or wrong. Landing the top rail on a line the window already has is what keeps a Meridian-Kessler installation from looking arbitrary, and it's why we set the height at your window instead of in a catalog.

Learn more

Motorized Shades in Meridian-Kessler

A sun sensor reads light at one spot, so it can drop a shade for a passing bright cloud and leave a Meridian-Kessler room dark for an hour. An astronomical timer follows sunrise and sunset by date instead, and for most houses that's the calmer setup.

Learn more

Custom Drapery in Meridian-Kessler

Panels stacked open still occupy wall. If the rod doesn't run past the trim, an open Meridian-Kessler panel sits over the glass and eats your view along with your daylight, so we extend the rod on both sides and size the return so the stack lands on wall.

Learn more

Valances & Top Treatments in Meridian-Kessler

Proportion is what separates a good top treatment from a heavy one. Roughly a fifth to a sixth of the total window height is the working range, and a Meridian-Kessler room with eight foot ceilings can't carry the depth that looks correct in a two story entry.

Learn more

Exterior Solar Shades in Meridian-Kessler

Wind is what kills these, and it isn't sun. An exterior shade left down in a Meridian-Kessler thunderstorm becomes a sail attached to your house, so every install gets a retract habit, and automated units get a wind sensor that overrides the schedule and takes the fabric up.

Learn more

Retractable Awnings in Meridian-Kessler

Fabric sheds light rain at pitch, and that's the limit of it. A Meridian-Kessler awning isn't a permanent cover, water pooling in a sag will stretch the acrylic and strain the arms, and the correct response to a real downpour is to bring it in.

Learn more

Commercial Window Treatments in Meridian-Kessler

Zoning matters more than count. Shades grouped by exposure behave sensibly on a schedule, so the south glass on a Meridian-Kessler floor drops together in the early afternoon while the north side stays open. Grouping by room instead produces a system nobody trusts and everybody's overriding.

Learn more

Skylight Shades in Meridian-Kessler

The rooms that need these most are the ones people forget: a stairwell that bakes all afternoon, a loft office with a screen in it, a bath where privacy is fine but glare isn't. Each of those Meridian-Kessler rooms wants a different fabric even under identical glass.

Learn more

Sliding Glass Door Blinds in Meridian-Kessler

If you're covering two doors in the same Meridian-Kessler house, order them together. Fabric and vinyl both run in dye lots, and matching a second slider a year later is the most common way people end up with two treatments that don't quite agree in daylight.

Learn more

Panel Track Blinds in Meridian-Kessler

Which side the panels stack on should match the door hardware. If the handle on a Meridian-Kessler slider is on the right and the panels stack right, you'll be reaching through fabric to open the door, and that's a decision nobody can undo after fabrication.

Learn more

Sheer Shades in Meridian-Kessler

When these need real cleaning, it's a professional job with the shade taken down, not a bucket and a cloth. Plan on that being occasional rather than routine, and keep the Meridian-Kessler shade out of the kitchen where cooking film will build up in the vanes.

Learn more

Pleated Shades in Meridian-Kessler

The DOE and ORNL number people quote, up to 20 percent heating energy saved, belongs to cellular shades and not to these. A pleated shade in a Meridian-Kessler room is a light and privacy product, and we'd rather tell you that than let a spec sheet blur the difference.

Learn more

Bamboo Shades in Meridian-Kessler

A fabric Roman shade and a woven wood shade fold similarly and they don't feel alike. Fabric gives you color and a soft edge, and the weave gives you texture and a light quality that shifts through the day, so a Meridian-Kessler room usually has an obvious answer once you see both.

Learn more

Dual Shades in Meridian-Kessler

With the bands aligned the view out is genuinely good, and it's better than a light filtering roller of the same opacity. The sheer sections are open enough that a Meridian-Kessler street or a backyard stays legible, and that clarity is the main reason people pick these over a plain shade.

Learn more

Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades in Meridian-Kessler

Wide windows are harder here because both rails have to stay level across the span. A broad Meridian-Kessler opening can show one rail slightly out of parallel, so past a certain width we'd split it into two shades under a shared headrail rather than push a single unit.

Learn more

Cordless Blinds in Meridian-Kessler

The lift on a cordless blind lives in the bottom rail: a spring balanced against the weight of the slats. That's why a Meridian-Kessler order gets built to the finished width we measure rather than cut down from a stock size, since the spring is matched to the slat count it has to carry.

Learn more

Hardwood Shutters in Meridian-Kessler

Install is fitting work, and it isn't carpentry. Frames go in first and get shimmed plumb, then panels hang and get checked for an even reveal down the meeting stiles. A Meridian-Kessler whole-house set takes longer than blinds because every panel is adjusted individually, and rushing that always shows.

Learn more

Composite Shutters in Meridian-Kessler

Indiana issues no trade license here, so the contract is what you hold. IC 24-5-11 requires a written agreement on residential work over $150, naming scope, schedule, total price and the product going in. Every Meridian-Kessler order runs that way, and we're insured and bonded.

Learn more

Smart Home Shade Integration in Meridian-Kessler

Voice control is the easiest part to set up and the easiest to break. An account change, a new router password or a renamed room can knock the link out, so a Meridian-Kessler system always keeps a wall control or a handheld remote as the thing that still works when the app doesn't.

Learn more

Blind Repair & Restring in Meridian-Kessler

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. Residential repair work still falls under a written contract when it runs over $150, which is what IC 24-5-11 requires in Indiana. Indiana licenses nobody for this trade, so what a Meridian-Kessler customer really gets is a written scope and a company that's insured and bonded.

Learn more

Shutter Repair in Meridian-Kessler

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. The tilt rod is the part people break. It's a thin piece of wood carrying every louver, and one hard pull separates it from the staples. Repairing it well means resetting each staple rather than gluing the rod back, and a rushed Meridian-Kessler fix on that part fails again within a year.

Learn more

Motorization Retrofit in Meridian-Kessler

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. A sun sensor pairs well with a retrofit on west glass. Afternoon sun in Meridian-Kessler from late May through September loads a room before anyone's thought to close anything, and a sensor handles it without a schedule. On a north exposure the same hardware sits idle.

Learn more

Outdoor Patio Shades in Meridian-Kessler

Fabric life outdoors is finite. Sun degrades any exterior mesh eventually, and NFRC attributes 40 to 60 percent of fading damage to ultraviolet, so a Meridian-Kessler shade on a full south exposure will show its age before one that's only catching late light. Replacement fabric on the same hardware is the usual path.

Learn more

Office Window Treatments in Meridian-Kessler

Zoning follows the sun, not the floor plan. Shades grouped by exposure act sensibly, so the south glass in a Meridian-Kessler office drops together in early afternoon while the north bank stays open. Grouping by department produces constant overrides and a system people won't use.

Learn more

Healthcare Window Treatments in Meridian-Kessler

Cleaning agents are harder on fabric than people expect. A shade wiped daily with a hospital-grade disinfectant won't age like one in an office, so a Meridian-Kessler spec has to name a material rated for that exposure rather than assume a commercial fabric survives the protocol.

Learn more

Multifamily Window Treatments in Meridian-Kessler

Damage recharge policies only hold up with documentation. If a Meridian-Kessler property intends to bill a resident for a destroyed treatment, the move-in condition, the product installed, the date and its replacement cost all need to be on record, and that's another argument for one repeatable spec.

Local Expertise, Real Results

We'll build your Meridian-Kessler window treatment plan around the openings in your own house.

Meridian-Kessler Window Treatments handles window treatments for Meridian-Kessler residents and businesses throughout Marion County, from measure to install to the service call years later. It's a small trade and it runs on whether the numbers on the order were right. Everything else, the fabrics and the finishes, is easier than that part, and most customers work it out quickly once somebody has explained what each product actually does in a room.

The service area covers the whole neighborhood, from 38th Street north to Kessler Boulevard and from Meridian Street east to the Monon Trail. Lots in the older plats measure 40 to 60 feet wide, and streets such as Delaware and New Jersey stop short of running through, so the crew looks at parking and access when it books a measure appointment. Meridian Street itself has deeper setbacks and larger lots, and the Forest Hills streets at the north end curve with the hills.

Your Meridian-Kessler project starts with the rooms you want to change. We'll ask what isn't working at the windows and look at how the light moves through your house. Our Promise

We'll explain the mounting choice before you order for your Meridian-Kessler home. If a product won't clear a handle or fit the available depth, we'll work through the options with you at the window.

Why Meridian-Kessler Chooses Us

The Case for Measuring Twice in Meridian-Kessler Homes

Serving Meridian-Kessler and Marion County with quality materials, thorough inspections, and transparent pricing.

A plan based on the local housing

Meridian-Kessler's houses date mostly from the early 1900s to the end of World War II, with the fastest building in the 1920s and 1930s and American Foursquare houses concentrated south of 44th Street.

Measurements for your own frames

We'll check each opening in your Meridian-Kessler home and look at the room available for the hardware. If a window has been changed since the house was built, the plan needs to work with the frame that's there today.

Samples viewed in your rooms

We'll discuss the finish alongside your Meridian-Kessler room's existing trim and furniture. The light at your own window helps you judge whether the fabric suits the space.

The consultation terms stated up front

Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover.

Our Process

How Your Meridian-Kessler Project Moves Along

Your Meridian-Kessler window treatment project starts with a design visit. We'll work through the openings before the product is ordered, then plan installation around the confirmed order.

Discuss the rooms

We'll talk through what you'd like to change in your Meridian-Kessler home and which rooms belong in the first phase. Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover.

Measure the openings

We'll check the available mounting space and how the windows operate. Any recently replaced frames need to be measured in their finished condition.

Review the product plan

We'll discuss the fabric and the mounting arrangement before the order goes in. If an opening limits your first choice, we'll explain what that means for the treatment.

Confirm installation details

We'll confirm the order's installation plan and explain how to use the chosen treatments. Ask about access for maintenance if you're considering motorized shades.

Common Causes

What we see most often on Meridian-Kessler window treatments

Meridian-Kessler homeowners typically call us about these scenarios.

Blinds That Will Not Close Tight

Light comes through at the slat edges even when the wand is turned fully. Usually the tilt mechanism only closes properly in one direction, which is a manufacturing fault that should have been caught on install day. On an older blind it can also be worn ladder strings letting the slats sit unevenly.

Stock Shades That Did Not Fit

Somebody measured the trim instead of the opening, bought four shades from a big box and found they were an inch too wide. There's a pile of them in the garage. That single mistake is behind a lot of our first calls in Meridian-Kessler, and it's why we measure rather than taking your numbers.

Motorized Shades That Have Gone Quiet

Nothing responds to the remote and the assumption is that the motors have failed. Usually the batteries are flat. Hunter Douglas states PowerView battery life is about one year and every wireless platform is close to that. It's the most under-disclosed running cost in this trade and it's the first thing we check.

A Media Room Still Too Bright

The projector image is washed out because light is coming in around the edges of an inside mounted shade. Dark fabric was never going to solve that on its own. Side channels or a light-blocking pocket at the header are what make a room genuinely dark, and they have to be ordered with the shade rather than added afterwards.

A Valance Fouling The Crank Handle

Somebody hung a treatment without operating the window first, and now the handle catches every time. It's a clearance problem that should have been measured, and the fix is usually an extension bracket or a different mount. Simple to avoid and irritating to live with twice a day. We operate every window at the measure for exactly this reason.

A West Room Nobody Uses After Three

It's the most common call we get in Meridian-Kessler. The living room is fine all morning and by mid-afternoon the sun is coming in almost horizontally, the television is unwatchable and the room is several degrees warmer than the rest of the house. People stop using it and assume that's simply how the house is. A solar shade at the right openness usually gives the room back.

How We Work

Five Stages, In This Order

Custom window treatments are made to your openings, so the order matters more than it does in most trades. This is how every Meridian-Kessler job runs.

1

Free In-Home Measure

Every opening gets three widths, three heights and a diagonal square check, because houses settle and an opening that is out of square is the difference between a shade that runs true and one that binds. Mounting depth gets read at the jamb. It all goes on paper before any product conversation starts.

2

Product and Fabric, In Your Own Light

Samples get looked at in the room they are going in, not under showroom lighting. This is where openness factor, inside versus outside mount, roll direction and material get decided, and where we tell you the light gap you are going to live with.

3

Written Scope and Contract

Opening by opening, with the mount type, the light gap, the operation and the total price in writing. Indiana requires a written contract on residential work over $150 under IC 24-5-11, and we would write one anyway.

4

Custom Fabrication

Your sizes go to the workroom. Two to five weeks is typical depending on product and finish, longer on specialty shapes and motorized configurations. You get the real date at the measure rather than a range.

5

Install and Walkthrough

Brackets anchored for the substrate they are going into, everything checked level and square, motor travel limits set and scenes built with you standing there. Then we show you how it all works and take the packaging with us.

Erica, my sales rep, was very patient as I had to delay installation twice. Once I was available, the installation was very timely. Handy, my installer, did excellent work. He showed me how they work and advised me on how to clean them in the future. Very thorough!"

"I had manual and automatic shades installed back in 2016. I was pleased with the sales and install process back then. I had some maintenance done today and was very pleased with the technician, Handy. A part that had been replaced twice before on one troublesome automatic shade was proactively replaced this time with an upgraded part at no cost. I was very pleased that the Window Valet stands behind their products."

Indiana Climate

Indiana Weather Affects Window Treatments Year Round

Indiana sees some of the most varied weather in the country. Meridian-Kessler homeowners live in IECC climate zone 5A, which carries a real cooling load in summer and a real heating load in winter. July averages a high near 85F, January averages a high near 36F with lows near 21F, and the muggy season runs from late May into late September. That is why the same window can be the hottest room in the house in July and the coldest in January.

Check the room at the hours you use it

Tell us when glare affects your Meridian-Kessler room. We'll look at which window is responsible and discuss a treatment for that use of the space.

Review privacy after dark

A fabric that gives a daytime view may leave the room visible after dark. We'll discuss that difference before you choose a shade for an occupied room.

Keep working windows accessible

We'll check the treatment against the sash and the controls you use to open the window. The finished arrangement needs to let you operate both.

Connect the plan across a room

If you're covering several openings in one room, we'll discuss how the treatments look together. Each opening still gets its own measurements.

Choosing the Right Treatment for Meridian-Kessler Rooms

An honest breakdown of the three we specify most often, and when each one is the right answer.

Cellular Shades

The one product in this trade with measured energy numbers behind it. Trapped air in the cells does the work, and DOE and ORNL testing found cellular shades saved up to 20 percent on heating energy and up to 15 percent on total heating and cooling against a bare window. In a Meridian-Kessler house that matters in January and again in July, which is unusual for one product. Single cell suits most rooms, double cell where the glass is large or the room runs cold. Top-down bottom-up gets you daylight and privacy at the same time.

Both seasonsInsulating$$
Solar & Roller Shades

What you reach for when the complaint is afternoon sun. Solar fabrics come in stated openness factors, and that number is the whole decision: a lower openness cuts more glare and more of the view, a higher one keeps the view and cuts less. On a west or south Meridian-Kessler window this is usually the honest answer rather than blackout, because blackout kills the room. Cassette or fascia hides the roll, and roll direction gets decided at the measure so the fabric does not foul a crank or a lock.

Glare controlKeeps the view$$$
Plantation Shutters

The one that stays with the house. Shutters are a finish rather than a covering, and they do not get replaced every few years. In Meridian-Kessler the material choice is technical rather than a matter of taste: composite and poly in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and sunrooms, because a four month humid season followed by a dry heated winter will move real hardwood, and hardwood only where the room stays conditioned. Louver size, frame style and divider rail get decided standing at your window.

Light Control

See What Each Fabric Does To The Light

Pick a fabric below and the window updates. It's a drawing rather than a photograph, so read it as a rough guide to what each family does in a Meridian-Kessler room, and to what it doesn't do.

Fabric type

Sheer, 10 percent openness

Ten percent of the weave is open, so you keep the view and most of the daylight. Glare drops a little. After dark, once your lamps are on, someone outside can read shapes through it, which is why this belongs on a view window rather than a bedroom.

Openness factor is printed on the fabric card, so you can compare one line against another before you order anything.

Keeps the viewNot private after dark

Solar, 5 percent openness

The usual pick for a west window or a covered porch. You can still read the yard through it, glare comes down noticeably, and the fabric intercepts a good share of the sun before it reaches you at four in the afternoon.

It also cuts the UV landing on floors and furniture. NFRC puts UV at roughly 40 to 60 percent of fading damage, so this slows fading rather than stopping it.

View and glare controlSlows fading

Solar, 3 percent openness

A tighter weave. The room goes dimmer and the view drops back to an outline. Choose it where the sun is the problem and the view is second, which around here usually means a west wall in July. That's a common call on this side of Indianapolis.

Openness affects how much you see out, not how private you are. A 3 percent fabric still shows silhouettes at night.

View becomes an outlineStrong glare control

Solar, 1 percent openness

Close to a solid fabric with a little view left in it. This is the strongest glare control in the solar family.

The trade is that it darkens the room on a gray January day too. Indianapolis averages a January high near 36F and the light is flat, so think about how the room reads in both seasons before you commit.

Darkest solar optionDim on gray days

Light filtering

No view through it. Daylight comes through the face diffused, so the room stays bright without a hot spot across the television or the kitchen island. This is the default for living spaces.

It isn't private in reverse at night. With the lamps on and the sun down, silhouettes still show.

No view through itBright without the glare

Room darkening

A denser fabric, usually with a liner behind it. Most of the light coming through the face is gone.

Light still arrives around the edges on an inside mount, so a room darkening shade gives you a dim room rather than a dark one. If someone in the house sleeps during the day, say so at the measure and we'll scope it differently.

Dim, not darkEdges stay bright

Blackout

The fabric itself passes essentially no light. What you'll still see is the perimeter. Lutron publishes an inside-mount light gap of about 3/4 inch per side on its Roller 20 and 64 shades, along with a standard factory deduction of 1/16 inch per side, and shades over 120 inches tall or past a 4:1 height-to-width ratio get larger gaps than that.

So if you need a genuinely dark bedroom, that gap has to be dealt with on purpose, either with side channels or by going outside mount. We tell you which one your opening can carry while we're still standing in the room.

Dark facePerimeter needs a plan

Openness factor is a measured fabric spec, so you can compare it line to line. The category names are not measured. One maker's room darkening can behave like another maker's light filtering, which is why the sample books come to the measure and get opened in the room they're going in, at the hour that room has the problem.

Meridian-Kessler Neighborhoods on This Week's Route

Window Treatment projects completed across Meridian-Kessler's neighborhoods and surrounding areas. Click any neighborhood for the specifics we have learned working there.

Forest Hills began as Stevenson's Woods, a family tract that Benjamin Stevenson subdivided in 1922 and renamed Forest Hills. It's the one part of Meridian-Kessler that was designed and platted as a whole, so its streets curve with the hilly ground while most of the neighborhood follows an irregular grid. The 237 houses went up mostly between 1924 and 1935, with a few as late as 1945, and brick columns still mark the entrances. Kessler Boulevard, the Monon Trail corridor, College Avenue and Northview Avenue form the edges, and the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in June 1983. Stevenson's own Prairie style house at 718 East 57th Street dates to 1911, more than a decade before most of its neighbors. View Forest Hills window treatment details →
Oliver Johnson and his sons filed in 1905 to turn a quarter section of their land into town lots, and the suburb they laid out kept his name as Oliver Johnson's Woods. Indianapolis annexed it in 1912, and the interurban line along College Avenue linked downtown with Broad Ripple. The district covers about 40 acres between Central and College Avenues and 44th and 46th Streets, with 92 contributing properties, 90 of them houses. Johnson's own Italianate farmhouse, built about 1862, stands at 4456 North Park Avenue and joined the National Register in 1979, twenty five years before the full district did in 2004. By the 1940s the wooded lots held a varied set of large middle class houses, many of them home to executives and business leaders. View Oliver Johnson's Woods window treatment details →
About four miles north of downtown, Washington Park fills the south central part of Meridian-Kessler, with Washington Boulevard running north and south through the middle of its roughly 60 acres. Indianapolis annexed the area in 1906, a year after it annexed Meridian Street north to Broad Ripple, and the streets were paved in November 1916. Sidewalks and pavement reached 43rd Street in 1923, and apartments went up in the 1920s and 1930s among the single houses, though most of the houses were built before World War II. The district sits between Pennsylvania Street and Central Avenue from 40th to 43rd Streets and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in June 2008, with Frank Hunter and others credited as architects. Orchards and dairy farms covered this stretch of Meridian Street before it was platted in the 1890s, and serious building waited until the 1920s. The National Register district, listed in 1986, runs from 40th Street to Westfield Boulevard and takes in about 113 acres on both sides of the street, so it straddles Meridian-Kessler and Butler-Tarkington. More than half of its roughly 170 homes went up between 1910 and 1930, most of them designed one at a time by speculative builders who knew what buyers wanted. The early residents were mostly professionals, with bankers and corporate executives among them. Booth Tarkington lived at 4270 North Meridian from 1923 to 1947, and the Indiana Governor's Residence has stood at 4750 North Meridian since 1975. The North Pennsylvania Street Historic District joined the National Register in December 2023. It runs from 46th Street north to Westfield Boulevard and from the west side of Pennsylvania Street east to the east side of New Jersey Street, so Delaware Street and Washington Boulevard fall inside it too. Some of these streets, Delaware and New Jersey among them, end without warning because landowners subdivided the area piece by piece. Pennsylvania Street and Washington Boulevard, along with Meridian Street, are where the neighborhood's wealthy residents built grand homes. The houses here date from the mid-1920s to the mid-1930s, with lots of roughly 7,400 to 8,200 square feet and sizes from about 1,600 to 4,400 square feet. View North Pennsylvania Street window treatment details →
Two county plats carry the East Meridian Heights name, and both sit east of Meridian Street. Arthur V. Brown's East Meridian Heights covers lots on East 46th, 47th and 48th Streets and on the 4600 block of North Pennsylvania Street, while McIlvain's East Meridian Heights takes in East 51st Street. The houses went up between 1916 and 1930 on lots of about 5,000 to 7,500 square feet, with sizes from about 1,700 to 4,000 square feet. The Pennsylvania Street end overlaps the North Pennsylvania Street Historic District, which joined the National Register in December 2023. Because the plat lines are old and irregular, the edges of the area are approximate, and most residents simply call it Meridian-Kessler. View East Meridian Heights window treatment details →
Houses along College, Winthrop and Carrollton Avenues carry the plat name Woodcroft, and a few lots on East 42nd Street do too. The houses were built between 1911 and 1945, most of them from 1920 to 1924. Their lots run from about 3,200 to 7,200 square feet, with many at about 6,400, and some Carrollton Avenue lots in the 4400 block are 40 feet wide and 107 feet deep, with a detached one car garage. Carrollton Avenue is the last street before the Monon Trail, which marks the east edge of Meridian-Kessler. Some residents call the area SoBro or South Broad Ripple, though the plat sits inside Meridian-Kessler's boundaries, and sizes run from about 770 to 1,800 square feet. View Woodcroft window treatment details →
Northcroft is a small plat on Carrollton Avenue in the 4600 and 4700 blocks, just north of the Woodcroft plat and beside the Monon Trail, and the Northcroft Addition name reaches East 49th Street as well. The houses date from 1910 to 1932, with lots on Carrollton Avenue of about 5,800 square feet and sizes from about 1,100 to 1,900 square feet. A Woodcroft house stands in the 4500 block of the same street, so the two plats run one after the other along Carrollton Avenue. Residents often call this stretch SoBro, a nickname used through this part of Meridian-Kessler, and the plat has no homeowners association. Covered porches and narrow lots give the street the look of the 1910s and 1920s bungalow blocks east of College Avenue. View Northcroft window treatment details →
Ardmore is a plat at the south end of Meridian-Kessler, on Park Avenue and Ruckle Street in the 3800 and 3900 blocks, just north of 38th Street. The houses went up within a few years of each other, between 1914 and 1916, with the Park Avenue houses the oldest and the Ruckle Street houses the newest. Each stands on a lot of about 6,600 square feet, which is about 50 by 132 feet, and sizes run from about 1,650 to 2,100 square feet. The area goes by Meridian-Kessler in everyday use. The streets named here are the ones where the plat name is confirmed, so the full extent of the plat may reach further along Park Avenue and Ruckle Street. View Ardmore window treatment details →
One block east of Meridian Street, the 4300 and 4400 blocks of North Pennsylvania Street hold lots from a plat called Highridge Place. The houses there were built in 1915 and 1918 and stand on lots of about 7,560 square feet, which is 55 feet wide and 137.5 feet deep, with sizes from about 1,800 to 3,800 square feet. The plat sits between two National Register districts, Washington Park to the south and the North Pennsylvania Street Historic District to the north, though neither takes in these blocks. The North Meridian Street Historic District lies a block to the west, along Meridian Street itself. Only a few lots carry the Highridge Place name, so the plat's full reach is uncertain.
